Quick lookup table for the most common metric-to-imperial and imperial-to-metric conversions. The exact conversion factors are given — use these for precise calculations, or use the Unit Converter for automatic two-way conversion between any units.

Length

Metric Imperial Exact factor
1 millimetre (mm) 0.03937 inches × 0.03937
1 centimetre (cm) 0.3937 inches × 0.3937
1 metre (m) 3.2808 feet × 3.2808
1 metre (m) 1.0936 yards × 1.0936
1 kilometre (km) 0.6214 miles × 0.6214
Imperial Metric Exact factor
1 inch (in) 2.54 centimetres × 2.54 (exact)
1 foot (ft) 30.48 centimetres × 30.48 (exact)
1 yard (yd) 0.9144 metres × 0.9144 (exact)
1 mile (mi) 1.6093 kilometres × 1.6093

Useful quick references:

  • 1 km ≈ 0.62 miles (or: multiply km by 0.6 for a fast estimate)
  • 1 mile ≈ 1.6 km (or: multiply miles by 1.6)
  • 1 foot = 12 inches; 1 yard = 3 feet; 1 mile = 5,280 feet
  • A standard doorway is about 2 metres (6 feet 7 inches) high

Weight and Mass

Metric Imperial Factor
1 gram (g) 0.03527 ounces × 0.03527
100 grams 3.527 ounces × 0.03527
1 kilogram (kg) 2.2046 pounds × 2.2046
1 kilogram (kg) 35.27 ounces × 35.274
1 metric tonne (t) 2,204.6 pounds × 2204.6
1 metric tonne (t) 1.1023 short tons × 1.1023
Imperial Metric Factor
1 ounce (oz) 28.35 grams × 28.35
1 pound (lb) 453.6 grams × 453.6
1 pound (lb) 0.4536 kilograms × 0.4536
1 stone (st) 6.35 kilograms × 6.35
1 short ton 907.2 kilograms × 907.2

Useful quick references:

  • 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs (precise: multiply by 2.205)
  • 1 lb ≈ 0.45 kg (precise: multiply by 0.454)
  • A US pound is 16 ounces; a UK stone is 14 pounds
  • Body weight: 70 kg ≈ 154 lbs ≈ 11 stone

Temperature

Temperature conversions require formulas, not simple multiplication factors:

To convert Formula
Celsius → Fahrenheit °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
Fahrenheit → Celsius °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
Celsius → Kelvin K = °C + 273.15
Kelvin → Celsius °C = K − 273.15

Key reference points:

Description Celsius Fahrenheit Kelvin
Water freezes 0°C 32°F 273.15 K
Room temperature 20–22°C 68–72°F 293–295 K
Body temperature 37°C 98.6°F 310 K
Water boils 100°C 212°F 373 K
Oven: moderate 180°C 356°F 453 K
Oven: hot 220°C 428°F 493 K

Quick mental shortcuts:

  • To get approximate °F from °C: double the Celsius and add 30. (20°C → 70°F. Actual is 68°F — close enough for weather.)
  • To get approximate °C from °F: subtract 30 and halve. (80°F → 25°C. Actual is 26.7°C.)

Speed

Metric Imperial Factor
1 km/h 0.6214 mph × 0.6214
1 m/s 2.237 mph × 2.237
1 m/s 3.6 km/h × 3.6
Imperial Metric Factor
1 mph 1.6093 km/h × 1.6093
1 mph 0.4470 m/s × 0.4470

Reference speeds:

  • Walking: ~5 km/h (~3 mph)
  • Cycling: ~20 km/h (~12 mph)
  • City speed limit: 50 km/h = 31 mph
  • Motorway: 100 km/h = 62 mph; 120 km/h = 75 mph

Volume and Liquid Measure

Metric Imperial (UK) Imperial (US)
1 millilitre (mL) 0.0352 fl oz (UK) 0.0338 fl oz (US)
100 mL 3.52 fl oz (UK) 3.38 fl oz (US)
1 litre (L) 1.7598 pints (UK) 2.1134 pints (US)
1 litre (L) 0.2200 gallons (UK) 0.2642 gallons (US)

Note: UK and US fluid ounces, pints, and gallons are different. A UK pint is 568 mL; a US pint is 473 mL.

Cooking conversions (approximate):

Measure Millilitres
1 teaspoon 5 mL
1 tablespoon 15 mL
1 fl oz (US) 30 mL

1 acre 0.4047 hectares × 0.4047
1 sq mile 2.59 km² × 2.59

FAQ

What's the easiest way to convert km to miles? Multiply by 0.6. For a more accurate result, multiply by 0.621. Quick mental check: 10 km ≈ 6 miles, 100 km ≈ 62 miles.

Is a US cup the same as a UK cup? Mostly — a US cup is 240 mL, a UK cup is 250 mL. The difference (4%) is small enough to ignore in most recipes. However, US and UK tablespoons and fluid ounces differ, so check if a recipe specifies the system.

What's the difference between a metric tonne and a short ton? A metric tonne is 1,000 kg (2,204.6 lbs). A US short ton is 2,000 lbs (907.2 kg). A UK long ton is 2,240 lbs (1,016 kg). When someone says "tonnes" in Australia, Canada, or Europe, they mean metric tonnes.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit quickly without a calculator? Multiply °C by 2 and add 30 for a close estimate. The exact formula is (°C × 9/5) + 32. The shortcut overestimates by about 2–3°F, which is fine for weather discussions but not precise enough for cooking.

What is a hectare and how big is it? One hectare is 10,000 square metres — a square 100m × 100m. It's approximately 2.47 acres. A standard soccer/football pitch (105m × 68m) is about 0.71 hectares. A city block in Manhattan is roughly 0.5 hectares.
